Adult ASD sexuality...

posted 30 months ago by keviefriend

I've asked this question before, but before there were so many people on the site:

I'm 25 gay male with HF Autism.
I was in an actual Autism program from grades 6-8, and then volunteered in same program until age 20.
Predictably, we had a lot of males in the program, and of the high functioning males, about 7 in 10 (in any given year) were "caught" as gay, either fooling around with other kids, or trying to find gay stuff online (most of that time, internet wasn't common in homes in the inner city.  Crap, now I just dated myself), or actually came out as gay (like me).
Now, as a grown up, I've met 5 other gay guys on the spectrum, separate from the school deal.
Anyone have any observations?

I'm a lesbian and have ASD but I don't know enough other ASD people to have any anecdotal evidence about whether we're more likely to be gay. One thing I think is that maybe more people have same-sex attractions than admit it, and ASD people are more likely to admit it to ourselves and be honest about it because we aren't as aware of the possible negative consequences it could have.

I'm asexual (don't have feelings for either) and I wonder if it is because people with ASD are wired different and may be able to connect with people of the same gender better due to familiarity. For example: If you are a boy, you know what being a boy is all about and you become comfortable with males because you can relate to them better and it is easier for your brain to deal with that trying to figure out how to deal with the opposite sex.
