animals passing away

posted 34 months ago by ctnoles71

My cat of 16 yrs passed away on Friday. Luckly my son was not there. Neiko has been around his whole life (he's 4&1/2)--I wonder how much he has noticed. I have wondered to my self if he has realized yet she not around (she was a mostly outside cat near the end). I told him befiefly that kitty was no longer w/us--I know he doesn't understand.

Any thoughts on this?

That's really sad.  I'm not a therapist, but I'd suggest explaining to him that the kitty was very tired and old and went to sleep forever.  Tell him that Neiko is okay, and not to worry about him.  I know it's a tough one.

I am sorry to hear this! I know first hand how tough this can be. When our dog Kenai passed away suddenly it was very hard on my son. He grew up with her and was only 9 when she passed (on Valentines Day no less). We explained to him that she was needed in doggie heaven more and that she would never really be 'apart' from us but always live in our hearts and thoughts. We have lots of pictures of her smiling self with us to remind us of all the good times we shared. We also talk about her a lot and all the fun and crazy times. Talking and sharing helped a lot and time really has helped ease the pain :o).
