How do people with Autism get involved in the school/community?

Since it is the beginning of the school year. at least in Maryland, I would love to hear how people on this site get involved in the community and schools. I work at a school for children that all have special needs many on the Autism spectrum and we have sports programs, art clubs, and chorus programs available. I am also always looking for community programs, mostly recreational, that would meet my students' needs and to tell parents. We have a program in DC and other cities called KEEN. There are also smaller programs that offer programs to meet the needs of children with Autism.

What programs are out there in your neighborhoods? I would love to know and share with others.

ASA has a local chapter in my neighborhood.  They arrange events at movies, sensory gyms, and other places where families with special needs kids can meet.

Lucy, I sent you a message on Autism services in two counties in NC. One for Moore county and one for Cumberland county! I'd get on the phone with them after the holiday as I am certain they can help you. If you are not in their area, they will be able to put you in touch with Autism services where you are :o).

We have programs offered through our Leisure Services department for "special population" (MR, MI, etc.) though anyone can attend them. We also have a parent support group for parents with children with ASD's. As for any programming for strictly children with ASD, I'm not aware of any, which is really sad, considering there is a LARGE population of kiddos with the diagnosis in our city (Dubuque, Iowa).

I am in DE and we don't ahve much ehre for people with Autism. Our local chapter of the autism society of DE just broke away from the society of America so they could be free to do what they wnated. They ahve some things going on and a friend of mine recently started a partnership with a local hotel to allow our chidlren with Autism to swim in the hotel pool wich was great for our kids.
